I love interchangeable circular needles and often use them for knitting gloves either with magic loop or two circular needles My blog post discussing DPN vs Magic Loop vs Two Circulars I have a video demo'ing how to set up interchangeable needles for two circulars without additional tips. When people ask what interchangeable needles I recommend I have lots of questions for them first: What material do they like? Any grip issues? How sharp to you want your tip? How do you feel about cables? Invariably I recommend one of the four sets below.
For stranded color-work I love my Knitter's Pride Karbonz Needles*. I don't love knitting with wood needles, but this set gives just the right amount of grip for stranded work, but provide a shaper tip with its metal tip.

Periwinkle Dragon Designs: Mixed Precipitation Socks
Inspired by the most ambiguous of Canadian weather report phrases, Mixed Precipitation is a great first stranded colourwork sock with no floats to catch and stitch patterns that are easy to memorize. Swap the colours on the second sock to get a fun fraternal effect!
This pattern requires two contrasting colours of fingering-weight yarn. It requires both one-colour and two-colour knitting, so more than one needle size may be necessary to get a consistent gauge. Video resources for many techniques are linked in the pattern.
